The vicuna resides
in South America within Peru, Bolivia, Chile, and Argentina.
They are the smallest members of the camel family. As social
creatures they live in packs that never stray more than a
couple of hundred feet of one another. They feed in the high
grasslands of the Andes and head to the hills for sleep. The
vicuna's fine wool is very expensive and highly sought after
but is sheared only once every 3 years because of its slow
growth. Only after being protected by law, vicunas have replenished
in population after nearly being driven to extinction in the
mid 1970's.
